Illustration Friday: Strength

I'll tell you what, it takes an immense amount of strength of character for an 8th grade boy to play the violin in the Jr. High School talent show assembly. That audience is scary when you can't see them.

How true. Being in front of such a large audience takes a lot of guts. Great illustration.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Yes, personal experience, however, I was never brave enough to do a solo as illustrated.

My son went through that, but with an evil twist; the rock band that preceeded him had used explitives in their song and were forcibly removed from the stage amidst a roar of protests and twittering from the audience. As the curtain rose on my son, standing alone and in a blinding spotlight, (he had been backstage and had no idea what had gone on before him) he thought all the commotion in the theatre was somehow because of him. Confused, he swallowed hard and played his classical violin piece flawlessly, and received a standing ovation when he finished. It was a brave and humbling thing to see, and he's been a hero of mine ever since.

I love this. People often don't think about how much strength kids have. The perspective in the illo is great too.

I love it as a thought of strength. Even more by personal experience. My daughter played a Haydn concert, accompanied on piano, with a big lump of grief in her throat, on her mother's funeral, last january. She was 13 years than. I was sooooo proud of her, she was able to do that.

You are so correct about the amount of strength requried to do that. You did a great job capturing his strength of facing the crowd alone.

Goodness - I 'performed' from the age of two and it didn't matter how many times repeated this feat .. it was always scary! Builds strength and pays off as an adult though :) You have captured the feeling well in your illustration!

Love this...also as a former pianoteacher I think you've reflected the impact of being on stage and the strength to play very well!

Hey Garth! I almost missed this one this week. Nice job! Once I played did a puppet show in grade school of two puppets (one on each hand) singing both parts to Hall and Oats' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin". Fortunately when I did that it was age appropriate and I was hiding behind the table.

Of course later, in the 7th grade I was in an "air band" lip synching to "Rock this Town" by The Stray Cats. That was a bit more intimidating.

Ah, memories!
