Star Wars-Made In China

"Made in CHINA?! WHY-IS-EVERYTHING-IN-A-MER-ICA-MADE-IN-CHI-NA?!" (with fist hitting down to emphasize every syllable).

This quote was by my 7 year old son when he saw that the Star Wars figurine he got from a Burger King kid's meal was made in China. My response to him was, "Son, if you can figure out how to make things cheaper in America, you'll be a rich man."

Yes a sentiment I can agree with, (although replacing America with the UK).

We over here seem to have the attitude of making home grown products very expensive and allowing the imports to be less expensive. I wouldn't say cheap as everything in the UK is expensive in relation to the states for example.

I am all for fair trade, but we often bemoan the loss of home industries, often blamed on the inability to produce goods cheaply enough to compete with those made in Asian countries on the world market however I feel we could do more to promote our own goods within the UK with maybe extra import taxes on 'foreign' goods making British produced goods more competative in the UK market.

I am no econamist but I do feel that more could be done and that we just give in.

I for one now even on simple basic everyday items look for UK origin items and produce and purchase those even if they are more expensive and where possible purchse from small family businesses rather than the global corporates who screw everyone from suppliers to employees to communities to actually put my money back into my own countries economy and not someonelses.

My son loves plastic dinosaurs and bugs. He always flips them over to see what kind they are by reading the text on the bottom. Finally he gave up because they always say CHINA on the bottom now.
